The Department of Biomedical Sciences and Veterinary Public Health is responsible for research and education at basic and advanced levels within the disciplines pathology, pharmacology, toxicology, immunology, food safety, virology, bacteriology, parasitology and epizootiology. Within the section for pathology there is today a professor of general pathology and we are now looking for a professor of veterinary pathology.

The department of Biomedical Sciences and Veterinary Public Health is part of the faculty of Animal sciences and veterinary public health. The department is responsible for research and education at basic and advanced levels within the disciplines pathology, pharmacology, toxicology, immunology, food safety, virology, bacteriology, parasitology and epizootiology. Within the section for pathology there is today a professor of general pathology and we are now looking for a professor of veterinary pathology.

Subject area

The subject area comprises aetiology and pathogenesis of diseases in domestic animals (cattle, goat, sheep, pig, horse, poultry, dog and cat) and fish. This includes how they are morphologically represented in tissues and organs microscopically and macroscopically, and how these changes relate to the clinical signs of disease in the animal.

Duties

The candidate should be responsible for the development of research and education in veterinary pathology in collaboration with the faculty’s and the university’s other researchers and teachers.

Furthermore, the candidate should within the subject area:

develop and lead internationally successful research
develop, lead and participate in teaching at basic, advanced and doctoral level
supervise PhD students
supervise in pathological diagnostics including necropsies and histopathological examinations
actively apply for external research funding at national and international level
collaborate with researchers within SLU
cooperate with researchers and other actors outside SLU
develop and maintain national and international networks with researchers, the industry, stakeholders and the society
disseminate research findings and contribute with relevant knowledge to society
carry out administrative tasks/assignments within the department, faculty and university
contribute to the strategic progress of the department, faculty and university
actively participate in the resident program in veterinary pathology
be able to use Swedish both orally and in writing within four years.
Qualifications

The applicant shall:

have a degree in veterinary medicine
have a PhD and competence as associate professor (docent) or equivalent academic qualifications in the subject area veterinary pathology
be scientifically skilled within the subject area
be pedagogically skilled and have the ability to integrate research and scientific approaches into teaching
have documented experience as main supervisor at doctoral level
have the ability to lead and develop a successful research group
have the ability to obtain external research funding in competition
have experience of diagnostics in veterinary pathology
have a good ability to communicate in written and spoken English.
Assessment criteria

Assessment of the candidate’s suitability for employment as professor will primarily be based on the degree to which the candidate possesses the qualifications required for the position.

The assessment of research expertise will take the following into account:

completed research activities and ongoing research within the subject area
ability to independently initiate and pursue internationally recognized research
ability to obtain external research funding in competition or through cooperation.
The assessment of teaching expertise will take the following into account:

planning, conducting and evaluating teaching
experience of practical and theoretical teaching in veterinary pathology
experience of supervision of doctoral students and residents
pedagogic vision
training in teaching in higher education or equivalent knowledge.
Furthermore, the assessment will consider the applicant’s experience in:

interacting with the society
dissemination of information on research and development projects
managing and developing activities and staff
diagnostic experience within pathology.
International specialist competence within the subject area (diplomate ECVP/ACVP) is a merit.

When assessing the candidate’s qualifications, equal attention will be given to teaching and research expertise respectively.
